Convert Surplus Council Buildings to Social Housing

Over 6,000 people are currently on Dorset Council’s housing list. Although plenty of new houses are being built across Dorset, not enough of them are affordable for rent or shared equity. Dorset Council is supposed to insist that private developments are 35% affordable but the latest figures show that in reality only about 17% actually are. South Walks House was only officially opened in 2014 and cost nearly £10 million. Despite this it is now empty and Dorset Council have said they want to turn it into housing. Local Lib Dems believe the needs of local residents who are struggling to find a home should come first and the whole building should be converted into affordable homes.

I call on Dorset Council to use South Walks House, and other Dorset Council buildings that are currently surplus to requirements, to provide 100% affordable and social housing.
