Sue Farrant

Dr Sue Farrant was selected by West Dorset Liberal Democrats to be their parliamentary candidate in September 2007. Born and brought up in Devon, Sue was educated at Plymouth High School, where she was Head Girl, and at Wye College, London University. After gaining a BSc in Rural Environment Studies, she went on to be awarded a PhD for a thesis on the role of women in rural society.

Sue has a varied CV. After school, she was commissioned into the Army, leaving in the rank of Captain after five years. She has also been a village hall cleaner, a writer and editor and has worked in the voluntary sector. For the last 15 years, Sue has run her own consultancy business, specialising in social housing.

Actively involved in politics since the 1990s, Sue was first elected as a councillor in Newbury and served as Mayor of that town and then Vice-Chair of the District Council. In the 2005 general election she was the Liberal Democrat candidate in South Swindon, where she increased the Liberal Democrat vote by nearly 50%.

Sue is a member of Amnesty International and a Friend of the Prison Reform Trust. Her recreational interests include the visual arts, music and hill walking. Sue has two grown up children, both of whom work in the public sector in London.
