No to fracking

I would like you to support my campaign to stop fracking in Dorset by signing my petition.

You may not know how close the threat to us in West Dorset. Most of the southern end of Dorset has been licensed to gas and oil companies from Christchurch to Chickerell. In West Dorset much of the area mentioned above is licensed by Egdon Resources PLC. PEDL 237 runs through Chickerell, Portesham the beautiful Valley of the Stones, all the area around Hardy's Monument, Martinstown, up to Winterbourne Abbas. PL 90 runs through Crossways, Broadmayne and Owermoigne, through Stinsford, Fordington, towards, but not quite reaching, Puddletown, Athelhampton and Tolpuddle. Whilst some of this area may be better for oil extraction, there is the danger of potential fracking too.

We the undersigned believe that David Cameron's intention to press ahead with his plan to go all out for fracking despite 99% of the consultation contributors being opposed is wrong. Fracking does not fit with our objective to tackle climate change.

Dorset is dependent on the beauty of its landscape and the integrity of its water: 20,000 people in Dorset  are dependent for their income on tourism and it produces 12% of our wealth; our farmers and agriculture depend on clean, safe water supplies, our landscape is known for its clear winter bournes and streams running from chalk uplands of Hardy country with the unique brackish wetland lagoon of the Fleet and Chesil Beach.

Our regulatory regime is weaker and less independent than it needs to be for this new process to be considered safe. There is a real risk that spills, leaks and water contamination will occur, air will be polluted, enormous quantities of waste water will need to be hauled, leading to heavy traffic movements for which our lanes are not suited – all of which would be catastrophic for this county.

Countries like Germany and Bulgaria have banned High Volume Hydraulic Fracturing; France and the Netherlands have announced a moratorium as has Quebec in Canada. New York State and Denton (an old oil town in the US, one of the first to experience fracking) have banned fracking altogether

We are calling for plans to frack in the UK, including in Hardy's Dorset to be shelved.
